How you earn shapes the questions to ask
- Individual general fitness sessions.
- Small-group programmes and session follow-up.
- Sessions in gyms, at clients' homes or agreed locations.
Build a schedule that includes travel
A coaching day includes preparation, sessions, travel and follow-up. Group bookings by location and plan for cancellations, weather and available equipment. If a gym supplies clients, clarify its payment, equipment access and responsibility for prepaid packages.
IPDJ's fitness framework covers the facilities and activities it describes. Confirm the titles and conditions applying to your circumstances, particularly for foreign qualifications; do not automatically extend it to every venue or discipline. Bring a sample programme and gym agreements. Incorporation does not replace the required coaching competence, and session income should be estimated after allowing for the time spent between appointments.

Questions to prepare your application
- Does the customer contract with you or with the gym?
- Where will you coach and what equipment will you use?
- Which qualifications match the proposed activities?

Before you incorporate
Registering as self-employed and incorporating a company are different routes. The choice depends on how your business actually operates. A Portuguese company alone does not determine your tax residence or the treatment of every source of income.
Information to gather
- Your country of residence and where you actually work.
- A description of the services or products you sell.
- Whether your customers are businesses or individuals, and their countries.
- Any shareholders, existing business structure and your planned timing.
